Without proper nutrition all through the summer months, kids can’t grow and develop properly, and they return to school in the fall poorly prepared to learn. The Summer Food Service Program provides nutritionally balanced meals to kids all summer long, filling the gap left by school meal programs that don’t operate through the summer.

How does it work? Site sponsors provide food to summer meal sites spread across Iowa, where volunteers distribute the meals to kids in need. The program is funded by the USDA and administered by a team of organizations like ours.

Benefits of the Summer Food Service Program come in the form of kids who return to school in the fall ready to learn, grow and develop. Behavioral issues in school are lowered, and proper childhood nutrition helps kids succeed in school and contribute more later in life.

Find a summer meal site near you by using the USDA site locator tool or texting “FOOD” to 877877.

Become a Summer Food Service Program Partner by signing up to volunteer or host a summer meal site next summer. Contact us at 515-564-0330 to get involved.
